Bob Ferrel attended Northern Illinois University and Jersey City State College, and by 1979 (age 19) was traveling Worldwide with the Duke Ellington Orchestra conducted by Mercer Ellington. While in the Duke Ellington Orchestra Bob was privileged to work with great performers including: Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Nancy Wilson, Johnny Hartman, Della Reese, Cab Calloway, Cootie Williams, Mulgrew Miller, and Kenny Garrett. Bob then performed for one year with Charlie Persip’s “Superband” at the Jazz Forum, Village Vanguard and The Kool Jazz Festival in NYC. After that time, Bob worked for six years with Southside Johnny and the Jukes, traveling worldwide, recording 3 albums, having appearances on MTV & TV shows, and appearing in the Touchstone movie “Adventures in Baby Sitting”. While playing in the Jukes, guest artists included Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Little Richard, the Beach Boys, Dionne Warwick and the Shirelles. Bob currently teaches 40 private students a week, and is former Musical Director for the Spirit of Life Ensemble, traveling Worldwide and freelancing in the NYC area. During his 18 years with Spirit of Life Ensemble, Bob played for 5 years at Sweet Basil, a renowned jazz club in NYC. Guests that played with the band included Ted Curson, Raul de Sousa, Kenny Barron, Eddie Henderson, Billy Higgins, Albert Mangelsdörff, Joe Lee Wilson, and Vinnie Cutro.
Bob has traveled to 25 different countries and 45 states, and recently Bob was the Guest Artist at the 2009 Nomme Jazz Festival in Estonia (eastern Europe). Bob recently completed a tour to at Paris, France, playing La Sorbonne University in 2014. Over the past few decades, Bob has played at many major venues in NYC (Madison Square Garden; Radio City Music Hall; The Broadway Show “Grease”; Lincoln Center; The Village Vanguard; The Jazz Forum; The Village Gate; Sweet Basil; The Mercury Lounge; The Ritz; The Palladium; Cleopatra’s Needle, Power Station & Record Plant studios etc.)
